What To Do When Your Car Gets Towed While On A Road Trip
Posted on: 3 September 2018
Cars can be the most efficient method of getting to and from a place. Even if you have to travel out of state, paying for gas money in an economy sedan can be cheaper than purchasing a plane ticket. Inside a car, you are also likely to be much more comfortable than inside of a bus, plus you can make stops as needed. If you have begun your road trip and something happens to your vehicle, you will need to figure out how to continue on with your vacation. Here are three things to do when your car needs a tow on a trip.
Call your insurance towing
Most insurance policies will include a tow to get the car off of the road. Call your insurance company and have them arrange to come to get your vehicle off the road. Let them know all the pertinent information that they need, including the mile marker that you are near and any other landmark information. Have your car taken to a location where the car will be worked on so that you know the vehicle will be safe.
Get a total diagnosis before making any decisions
Cars can break down or need work for a number of reasons. The reason could be bad tires, which means that you just need a change in the four wheels. Some problems can be under the hood, which can be a replacement or rebuilding of a part. Get a full diagnosis of the issue, then determine the cost. Once you know the cost and how you will be able to pay, you should proceed with the repair. If the repair calls for a part, see if you are able to order the part and have it come into the shop, in order to save money. Once you have the diagnosis, you will be able to make a decision on how to best get the car repaired while you are away on your trip.
Find out if you are eligible for a rental car
After your car is towed and the issue is being worked on, determine if you will be eligible for a rental car. A rental car is a perfect way to continue on with a road trip and leave your car where it will be safe while being repaired. Rental car daily rates are often low and if you can use your insurance, you may be able to get the car rental for a cheaper rate than your gas budget for the trip. Be sure to let the repair company that you will be continuing on with your trip and what day you will be back in town to pick up your vehicle.
