Winter Is Here: Are You Prepared For Towing Services If You Need Them?

Posted on: 20 November 2019

Winter is the number one season for towing services. Not everyone is as ready for it as they should be. If this is your first true winter in a snowy area, here is how to be adequately prepared for any towing need before you actually need it.

Add a Towing Rider to Your Insurance

In the event that other vehicles on the road slide over ice patches and smack into you, you would have to pay for a tow truck. You would not be reimbursed by your own car insurance unless you have a towing rider, and the other driver's insurance may take much longer to file and accept your claim for damages. If you have the towing rider, you can call the insurance company and they will dispatch a tow truck to your location free of charge.

There are also motorist clubs that offer roadside assistance with membership dues. You can either buy this and use it in place of a towing rider, or use it as a backup to a towing rider. Either way, you will have more than enough free tows to get you through the worst winter you could possibly imagine.

Put Tire Chains and Snow Tow Chains in Your Trunk

Having never lived where snow dominates the fourth part of the year, you might not be familiar with these chains. Tire chains are wrapped around the tires and locked in place to provide you with far better traction on icy and snowy roads. You will slip and slide less with tire chains on the tires. As for towing chains, these chains hook up underneath your vehicle, and they help tow trucks pull you out of really deep ditches and ravines covered in snow and ice. If you have the snow towing chains, other passenger and heavy-duty trucks can also help you out of a tight spot, but it is recommended that you wait for a tow truck first.

Familiarize Yourself with the Local Towing Companies

It helps to know what towing companies are in operation near you and where the towing companies' offices are located. Knowing this helps you figure out how soon you and your vehicle will be rescued and/or receive towing service. If you are working through a motorist club or insurance company to get a tow, they will provide you with the name, address, and contact information for the towing company that is dispatched to your location.
